Self coverage
This is a little old, but still is worth a comment. In a small town in Minnesota, the mayor is also reporter/editor of the weekly newspaper - and therefore, we are told, gets to cover himself (http://www.minnpost.com/chuckhaga/2008/02/11/845/bad_press_hes_not_complaining). Even if the mayor is the only person who works for the newspaper, which is not explained here, there has to be another way. Why not ask a stringer to step in? Or, as a last resort, can the mayor write a column instead of trying, impossibly, to write an objective story about himself? A little thought, and a little skepticism, are in order. I wished the story and the newspaper association had gotten past the "golly gee" factor.
