Some California colleges won't reveal football budgets
The exact amount of public funding for community college football in California
is unknown because the state doesn't specifically keep track of it. In March,
The San Diego Union-Tribune sent California Public Records Act requests
seeking basic football budget information, including a breakdown of revenue and
expenses, to all 72 community colleges with football programs.
By law, they are required to provide the documentation. Yet only 43 revealed
their budget numbers, most with information vastly different from what they
report to the federal government in mandated but mostly meaningless reports each
year about their revenues and expenses. Some didn't respond after repeated
reminders of the public records law. Others provided lame excuses.
