Reporters kept out of briefing on Virignia Tech shooting
Citing rules that protect the privacy of student records, the panel investigating the deadly shooting at Virginia Tech barred reporters from accompanying it on a tour of the buildings where Seung-*** Cho killed more than 30 people. W. Gerald Massengill, the panel's chairman, said while he wanted the proceedings to be open, Virginia law makes student records private. Since the names of the dead area already in the public domain, how is seeing where they were killed violating their rights to privacy?
In a bit of irony, panel member Tom Ridge complains that privacy laws are keeping the panel from reviewing Cho's mental health records.
