S.D. attorney general considers FOI reform

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) Attorney General Larry Long says he might recommend that the Legislature set up a system that lets people request access to public records.

He says it would be similar the federal Freedom of Information Act, which sets rules for reviewing and obtaining government documents.

The attorney general says people often do not know where they can find the public information they are seeking.

The recommendation could be part of a report due by month's end on a massive review of government records. The review involved thousands of state, school district, municipal and county records to determine which ones are open to the public, confidential or unspecified.
