National Assembly should end public sector's undue secrecy

President Roh's war with the media has shed light on what could pass as a forgotten area _ freedom of information.

In late May, the six major political parties vowed to revise the Freedom of Information Act to enhance the people's right to know. The political community made the decision angered by the government's moves to restrict freedom of the press. But it has yet to take any concrete action until now when the National Assembly's extraordinary session in June is nearing its end, mired only in the premature election fervor. Few voters appear surprised, however, as they have seen too often politicians going back on their words.
