Labor Department denies newspaper request to attend mine investigation interviews

The Labor Department has denied The Salt Lake Tribune's request to be present for interviews with witnesses as it investigates the Crandall Canyon Mine disaster. The department claims allowing access would compromise the investigation, damage reputations of innocent people and confuse miners' families. However, a federal court ruled in the 1980s that mine accident investigations have to be open to the public. Click here for more information.
