Utah Judicial Council proposes to restrict photography in courtrooms

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the Utah Judicial Council approved a draft rule barring photographers from taking pictures of documents that had not been entered into the official public record. The rule is a response to the April 5 photo taken by a Deseret Morning News photographer of a letter polygamist leader Warren Jeffs attempted to hand to the judge presiding over his rape-by-accomplice trial. The News had enhanced the photo to read the writing on Jeff's note. The court will be accepting comment on the rule for 90 days on the court Web site after the rule is published. It's an extreme reaction to a one-in-a-million photograph.
