Bill in Virginia would make university donor information secret

A bill proposed in Virginia would make university donor information secret (see story). That would be a shame. Already many public universities are able to keep that information secret through the use of non-profit foundations. It would be a shame for Virginia to regress to a similar state of secrecy. The university says there are internal checks in place to prevent corruption, but we know that checks don't always work. For example, check out a story in the UCLA Daily Bruin from November where a student journalist uncovered donors providing money in return for their children to get admitted to the competitive dentistry school. So much for internal checks. The best check on government corruption is transparency.

I feel information on donor and recipients should be shared, as well as the policies in place. I signed a donor card thinking a fair practice was used, but now have serious doubts of the ethics used in the programs in place. I have shared these concerns with my immediate and extended family members so they can have rights to the use of my organs. I still want to participate in a donor program because it is a worthy cause. I find this very sad that you are unable to trust a profession that has so much control over our health and wellness,as well as the quality of life of so many.
