Indiana campus paper stands up to "off-the-record" public speech
The Indiana Daily Student newspaper at Indiana University stood up to a former deputy national security adviser to President Bush who wanted to give a public speech on campus on the condition it be off the record. As a result of the campus paper refusing to stay off the record, the official, Meghan O'Sullivan, canceled the speech. O'Sullivan said she has given many public speeches off the record and that she can't allow them to be on the record because of legal issues. "(It is) a common practice for people who leave government," she was quoted in the student paper. "I have spoken widely off-the-record and it has been respected." What? Any journalists out there respect such requests? If you do, let's hear what it's all about because that's news to me. Kudos to the student paper for standing strong. See
