Looking for work? SPJ can help!

If someone told you that you could have unprecedented access to the world’s top editors and news directors, would you believe them? Thanks to SPJ's freelancer directory, this isn’t a far-fetched idea.

SPJ’s freelance directory can put your work at the fingertips of the country’s top editors and news directors. The directory enables independent journalists, who are members of the Society, to post information and links to work samples online for free. This same list is viewable by editors and news directors from around the world. They can search by state, specialty or both. All you have to do is post your best work and wait for the calls to come.

To help ensure these decision makers are aware of your work, we will send out regular announcements to more than 5,000 editors and news directors, explaining the benefits of using our directory.

Hi Beth,

Thanks for all the new postings and good info.

I've tried many times to update my entry in the directory, but when I click that link, it says page not found. I've got loads to ad, including much more specific information about what I cover. It seems like a problem with the web site. Can you help with this?

Thanks,
Jennifer

It's hard to believe that spj has any real interest in freelancers after taking the position it took in support of National Geographic in Faulkner v. National Geographic Society. Why was there any need to take any position? I really need an answer if I am to continue my membership. As of now, your directory has gotten this experienced writer/reporter nothing and you appear to be using my membership fees to work against me.

Hi, Jennifer!

Sorry you've had trouble with SPJ's Freelancer Directory. Please contact SPJ Web admin Billy O'Keefe at bokeefe@spj.org. I'm sure he'll be happy to help you.

Hi, Barbara --

Sorry you haven't had much luck so far with solicitations gleaned from SPJ's Freelancer Directory. The Society will continue to market the directory, which has generated some interesting (and lucrative) leads for many members. We hope the directory will help you, too.

As for your questions referring to the amicus in the Faulkner v. NGS case: this particular brief asks the court to clarify the law in a way that would help publishers AND freelancers. Though I believed -- and still do -- that the brief has merit, supporting it generated confusion and conflict that wasn't in SPJ's best interest. So, Legal Defense Fund Chairman Dave Aeikens and I dropped our support -- and the Society's name -- from the brief.

It is because Dave and I care very much about the interests of freelance journalists that we decided to support the brief in the first place.

I have invited members with questions about this matter to call me at 303-954-1503. Would be happy to speak with you, too.

I, too, have heard nothing from anyone who apparently was given the directory.

I'd be really interested to hear from SPJ freelancers who did obtain assignments via the directory.

Is there something that the ones who haven't had much luck need to do to improve our chances? Especially now that many newspapers, etc., are reducing their staffs, possibly swelling the ranks of the freelance market.

I've actually had 3 serious inquiries for work since my entry was published, one of which has lead to a regular periodic gig and one of which is looking promising.

The work I'm getting from the Freelancer Directory is paying for the cost of my SPJ membership many times over!
