Going to the SPJ convention?

This year's annual convention -- in Atlanta Sept. 4-7 -- will offer two time slots for freelancers. Here's what they'll be. Please let me know if you are planning to go to the convention and have any interest in being a panelist. Hope to see you there!
  • The freelance magazine article. From idea to published clip, this session takes you through the freelance magazine article. Hear from editors and professional freelancers about how to shape an idea, report it, write the article and get paid. One-hour session.
  • Freelancing in today's journalism industry. Today's changing industry is driving many to consider freelancing either as a moonlight job or career. Hear from professional freelancers about the pros and cons of freelancing in the face of budget cuts and layoffs. Learn how to launch a business, pitch, market and network. Listen to successful freelancers share their experiences in newspaper, magazine and book writing. Half-day workshop.

First, I probably won't be going to the convention. I'd like to—I love getting face time with members of my tribe, after all—but it's hard to justify the expense and hassle right now.
And it's not like a paltry two sessions focused on my current situation are a proper incentive. I suspect a lot of freelancers are in similar straits.
So what I want to know is how will SPJ make these sessions available to members not able to attend? (For example, right now the National Press Photographers Association is streaming video, liveblogging and twittering its Multimedia Immersion Seminar right now.) And would the society consider holding an online-only event for freelancers? That I'd be sure to attend.

Hi Amy,

I will be in Atlanta for the convention and would love to go to either workshop.  Would you have any idea if the interns for the Working Press have been chosen for this event?

Pierce is right on. Besides the cost, my attendance is limited by the in home duties that led to my freelancing in the first place. But streaming video and/or a teleconference would be very welcome.

Please don't think that the sessions specifically for freelancers are the only reason to attend an SPJ convention.  Most years, they're packed start-to-finish with info and inspiration to help you do a better job.

I did see several sessions being taped last fall in Washington, but I'm not informed about the plans for Atlanta.
