Inspiration is key

Here is the first in a new series of posts on how to stay inspired. With such an underpaid, overworked profession more and more people are not excited to go to work each day.

My first tip is to listen to your audience. Yes, every journalist will probably receive voicemails, e-mails and letters from people who do not agree with stories. But, be sure to listen to positive feedback too!

When readers call or e-mail happy thoughts about stories I've written I start by reading or listening to the comments. You can even save the messages on your phone or print them out and pin them up on a wall or file them - so when you are feeling down about your job you can reference these and feel spirited again.

I also write or call back to thank the readers for being interested in my stories. This personal touch can really make readers feel as though they've connected with you - and it will make them even bigger fans.

So when you're checking your e-mail this morning - look out for inspiration!

"You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to
enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand."

Woodrow Wilson
28th President of the United States
