Takin' it easy

Wow our jobs are stressful. So how do you deal?

Me? Well I'll be honest: I used to drink and chain smoke cigarettes. Now I didn't drink on the job of course, but I did take several smoke breaks. And given that my lunch hours were often times nonexistant, I figured the smoke breaks make up for it. And after work, I'd hit the bar to have a few rounds. The bar was walking distance from my condo, so it was no real problem, at least until I realized how unhealthy it was.

There were even times when I would sit at my desk while editing or writing, and I'd have a cigarette on my lips. It's not because I'm anxious to smoke, but that my saliva helps seep some of the nicotine on my mouth and tongue, so it was a little relieving.

After realizing how much damage I was doing to myself, I have been smoke free since September, and drinking is now moderate and only on weekends, usually during a meal.

For the short-term dealing with stress, I always chew gum. For unwinding after work, it could be anything: I live in Hawaii! I could always tan or swim at my pool deck, or go hiking in a nearby forest. Sometimes I go shopping, but the traffic always stresses me out anyway. But usually I always end up falling back to my age-old habit: Videogames. I've got tons to keep my mind off my job when I'm at home.

I always found it rather stress relieving to blog about relieving my stress. Trust me. It works. You should try it! Now would be a good time to start. :)

What I do to deal with stress is the same thing I used to do in college: drink coffee and listen to music. Actually, I drink coffee and listen to music on my iPod all day. Actually Tuesday was a good example - I had the A1 centerpiece jumping to an A3 centerpiece in the Register on Irvine's development and population growth. I was running around the whole day and rippin' my hair out - but any time I was getting flustered I went to get a coffee refill and stretched my legs a bit.

I get active. I started dancing and the exercise is great. I also highly recommend talking your breaks and walking around. I'm a copy editor, and when we finish a stressful edition we'll walk en masse to the coffee shop down the street. It's nice to just get some fresh air! Sometimes we've all gotten there and realized no one wanted coffee ... we just wanted a destination and an excuse to walk.

I'm a copy editor and when I finish working on the weekly (which has an earlier deadline), I leave the office and walk to a coffee shop, usually with friends from work. That helps mellow me out. Many times, like Renee said, we find we don't actually want anything more than to get out of the office for a bit.

Juggling. When your shoulders ache from crouching over the keyboard for hours, get out in front of everyone in the newsroom and try to juggle. You look ridiculous, your staff laughs at you, and everything is immediately right with the world.

I picked up the habit from an old editor at Computerworld. Hey, Kevin!

I've never tried it, but my cousin insists that when stressed, a simple cartwheel will dissolve all your negative energy.

Think of it, if you miss it you can laugh it off with your friends. If you land it, well, landing a cartwheel would make my day!
