Tools of the trade

As journalists, we're lugging around all kinds of gear and paperwork, mostly to make us look really busy. Sometimes we really are.

So what kind of stuff do you lug around to help you do your job? Here's my stuff

Notebook: Natch. You never know when you're gonna get a callback or a tip on your cell phone while you're driving. It's always nice to be able to pull over and at least take down whatever info you can.

Macbook: I literally use this thing as a notebook. I always have a word processor open, and I type almost as fast as some people can talk, and it helps me formulate my stories better if I'm able to actually visualize how the words appear written out. Plus it has an airport. And wherever wireless isn't available...

Modem: I lug around my Clearwire modem, which doesn't require a line out to log onto the 'Net. Instead, alls I need is an outlet to charge the modem, and I just plug it into my laptop. It works like a cell phone, picking up signal practically everywhere.

Recorder: I used to not rely on these things. I didn't like how it can malfunction sometimes, and that it could run out of batteries. I also personally thought that I could zone out when I'm not concentrating intensely on what's being said. But eventually I stopped being stubborn, and I purchased one. It's helped out immensely, especially for those way-too-often times where there just isn't a place to sit so I can type on my laptop.

Two cell phones: One personal, and one from the company. My company phone's voicemail has my personal cell, so that way I'm the easiest person to get a hold of.

I bought a pocket pc phone.  It's a cell phone, notepad, pda and internet connection all on one.  I can even type out a 500 word article on the mobile Word program nearly as quickly as I can on my PC.  The best part is that it fits in my pocket and cost me $200.

Whoo Gene you sure do have a mountain of stuff. But then again, so do I.
And Jamie - I have a pocket pc too!

My list:

Notepads: The officials I cover like to talk and I write big.

Pens: I carry probably way more than I need - but what if one runs out of ink?

Highlighters: Nothing is mightier than a highlighter when it comes to reviewing a 400-page budget!

My laptop: And yes, by that title, I mean my laptop. Sure work gave me a PC laptop - but the battery life of 30 minutes when not plugged in, the Windows 2000 OS and lack of any useful applications for mobile journalists means that thing stays at work. I bring my laptop pretty much wherever I go - by the way this 15-inch Powerbook (go Apple!) is named ... "Lois Lane." She has all the goods a mobile journo - or mojo - needs: Word, Excel, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro...... Ah she's a beaut! And, her battery life is about four hours which is good except during those extra long council meetings (longest was 17 hours, 17 minutes)....

Extra battery: There is no plug for Lois at council meetings - so I have an extra battery. Some of the audience laughs when I have no battery life and have to switch the batteries - it's the first sign of a long night to come.

Camera: Photos, that is. I always keep a digital in my purse - and it can record up to 3 minutes of video! (Note: I bought this camera.)

Camera: Video! Yes, I am trying my best to become a mojo. I carry my again personally bought video camera everywhere I go. My latest video can be seen by copying this long link into your web browser (sorry no html in comments!) - http://www.ocregister.com/ocregister/news/local/greatpark/latestnews/article_1676142.php

Food: Fruit leathers, granola bars, water, etc. is always with my council bag for those again long council meetings.

Girlie stuff: Boys I won't bug you, but it's a reality. I carry lip gloss, a jacket, lotion, etc. to help me through my long meetings and assignments.

Let's see now, I think that's about it.

This has nothing to do with tools, but it's hillarious:

Yesterday on NPR's afternoon Fresh Air program (maybe to make a silly point about silly politics) the hosts first had an interview with George Tenet (With his famous "slam dunk" comment about Saddam Hussein and weapons of mass destruction). in which he gave rehearsed answers and awkwardly stalled my addressing the host by her first name, repeatedly (Well, Terry, Terry, my answer to that would be...)

Then the following interview was with John Ridley, who wrote a comic-book series called "The American Way" and ridicules all of the 'values' and 'accomplishments' of military America we had just heard from Tenet.

Juxtaposition can say more than anything sometimes.

Well, being a copy editor, I don't take my job with me after hours, but still I always carry a pen, a reporter's notebook and a smaller notebook (the smaller one for personal items, the larger one for work-related thoughts), and my planner and cell phone.
When I was a reporter, I always had those things, plus a small recorder just in case.

Sonya,

What model video camera do you use? I'm considering making a similar investment.

Thanks!

Being spill prone I have those little Tide stain pens in my car and bag. I'm not entirely convinced it works but I have had less coffee spills on white blouses since I bought them!

As for technology, my company gave most of us these small handheld video cameras (I've seen them advertised for $99. I'm not certain what the brand name is. It has an attached USB stick so you just hook it up to the computer without cords) and I also carry my own point-and-shoot digital.

And I've got to have my iPod handy while writing certain stories -- a little writer's block just needs a little Wolfmother playing in the background.

I have a Canon camera - it records onto tapes and can easily download to my computer. But....I bought it for recording my tap dances (so when I choreograph I don't forget what I did). So......I would not recommend the camera I have because it doesn't have a plug for an external mic.
I'd recommend getting a camera that records digitally (so there are no tapes to lose, catch on fire, etc.), that has a plug for an external mic (so you can buy a wireless mic and clip it on people to improve your audio quality), and a camera that has a built in protector from wind (without that a beach shot sounds like you're in a wind tunnel).
Good luck Brea - once you find a camera please share with us all what you bought!
