Tell me why do I do this?!?

A topic from a regular reader:

I'm an avid Gen J reader, and I recently had an interesting e-mail
conversation with a former professor who was asking me about my career
and sort of where to go from my first job. I'm not on the hunt or
anything, but I am nearing the anniversary of when I started. She
asked a series of questions for reflection, and when I shared them
with some friends, they all had interesting takes.

I wondered if you'd like to blog about it to see what SPJ'ers think.
And if not, maybe they'll just help you find focus as well:

"So, what is journalism to you? A career? A job ladder? A mission? A
calling? Who do you do it for?? Yourself? The community? The company?
Maybe clarifying this will help you figure out where you want to go."
-- Susan Brockus, California State University, Chico.

Take care,
First Draft reader (name excluded)

Well, reader, thanks for reading! And - a big thanks for the question.

For me, journalism is a calling and something I do for the community and myself.
To be more specific, I feel drawn to the profession (I'm an A++++ personality, a multi-tasker and someone who likes learning about many different topics). I practice journalism for the community (to provide factual, unbiased information so the public can make decisions based on those facts - rather than slanted information). I also practice journalism for myself - mainly because I get to learn about so many different things and I get to meet many different people (which keeps my brain quite occupied).

So please, everyone, chime in with your own answers! And, send in your questions for us too!

I do journalism because it's become somewhat of a personal mission for me. I do care about the community, but for me personally, I enjoy being one of the more well-informed members of society. All my life, I had been left in the dark about a lot of things, and this is really my way of fighting back against veiled secrets.

Sorry I haven't posted in a while guys. Just been going through some personal strife, but I'm much better now and read to start contributing again!

Well, I do it for the money. (Just kidding.) I really do journalism because I feel a need to keep the people informed of what's going on in their communities, their cultures, their state, their world. I feel like people are so mis-informed so often, and if I could have a part in clearing up misinformation, that would make my day. I like to help people understand what's going on in society, that not everyone thinks or looks like them and that they can and should take an active part in their communities.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Danielle. I too think that people are regularly getting incorrect information. Today we're not just competing to provide information with newspapers, TV stations, radio and media Web sites...we're competing against public relations firms spreading their information as though they were regular news stories. This disgusts me. We have to show people why public relations firms and misinformed blogs should not be their only sources of news.

Hm.. why *do* I do this?
I like knowing that we're helping disseminate information about what's going on in the community and around the world. We're helping dispel ignorance and allowing people to make informed decisions/opinions.
Also journalism is a way to connect people.
Being out in the community helps reporters feel connected to readers, and we use our medium as a way to connect them with other readers.
It's a tiring, but fun, job, and every day there's something new going on to read/write about.
