When change is smooth

We have an advantage being young. We haven't been working in one career for most of our lives. This is a time when we can switch apartments each year, swich jobs if we don't like a certain path, switch boyfriends or states or clothing styles with little discomfort.
But even having been doing one thing for two years (just a blip in our lives, really) it's hard to switch to another path, even within the same field.

How does one get their start in different fields of journalism? What path did you take and how did you do it (writing, broadcast, radio, photography, editing, et al.)?

I am rethinking my journalistic focus, something I'm sure will happen more than once in my life, but it's a difficult task. Even just one or two years of a certain path creates a barrier, and casts doubt.

If anyone's done this, or is thinking about it, please share how you went about changing career paths!

This is a tough one and I've wondered the same thing.

There are times when I think it'd be nice to learn other crafts or other ares of our industry, but it's tough since I had laser-sharp focus on the actual news reporting technique throughout my education.

Sometimes I feel like the guys in Shaolin Soccer: I only know how to do Kung-Fu and nothing else.

So yeah, I'm interested in thoughts from other folks as well.
