Has Anyone Seen This?

Should we be completely disheartened by AngryJournalist.com? Someone responding to my Gen J column on burnout sent me the link to site and it has more than 5,000 POSTS, from people angry about co-workers stealing their food ("I'm pissed because money is tight and some *sshole in the building ate my yogurt") to complaints about layoffs.

Its founder Kiyoshi Martinez was a newspaper reporter before chucking it and going over to the "dark side" (a.k.a. public relations). Good for him, but does he have to get journalists together to say what everyone already knows? Don't get me wrong here—by no means am I one of those shiny, happy people that think nothing's wrong with the industry. I guess I'm bringing this all up because I'd like to know how others deal with negativity in the workplace. Talk amongst yourselves.

Yes I have seen it. I ordered a T-shirt from there. ^_^

I don't see a problem with having an online forum for angry journalists. As many of you well know, journalists don't have any problem gathering to complain about their chosen lifestyle, whether it be during happy hour or on a separate message board.

Angryjournalist.com is just another venue for journalists to not only say what everyone knows, but do what they would normally do anyway.

The way I deal with negativity is that I just sorta agree with whatever complaining there may be, mostly because I probably agree with what they are complaining about. But then I try to follow that up with positive aspects about our job.

In our situation, we are 100-percent privately owned so it gives us a sense of job security that newspapers who answer to Wall Street can't provide. Plus our supervisors are great, news-oriented people. Then the anger is tempered a bit and we survive another day in our chosen profession.

I'll make sure to read that site every time I am having a good day. What's the point. I agree. I don't like it because I don't like dealing with negativity in the work place. Having a site like that just gives passive aggressive reporters a place to vent instead of talking to their managers and letting their concerns be known.

Maybe I'm just idealistic because that is what I would want my employees to do.

I would hope people are disheartened about the comments on the site. More specifically, I'd hope that corporate executives, owners, managers and basically anyone with any power to change the conditions in newsrooms to make the lives of journalists better would be disheartened to read what's going on.

Frankly, I don't know what the solution is to dealing with negativity in the newsroom. But I would think that being able to talk about it among others that share your same frustrations would be a start. Maybe posting about it on the site and reading responses will give them guidance about what to do next.

As for if I "have to get journalists together to say what everyone already knows," I asked myself that as I approached 2,500 comments. I sincerely thought about taking the site down and stop taking submissions. I'd pretty much thought that anything that could be said had been said.

I floated the idea around and overwhelmingly was told to keep the site going. For some it gave them some sort of bright spot in their day to read what others were saying. For me, it's been the opposite while reading all the negativity. But if it's helping someone get through their night shift on a weekend on the copy desk, I'll keep it up.

I hear ya, Kiyoshi. You, too, Aaron. I guess my concern is for the people who still enjoy the business and are increasingly surrounded by more and more toxicity on a daily basis. Yes, our field is changing. That's not going to stop and no one knows how major the fallout will be in the end. How do you SURVIVE these changes? Solutions, people, solutions.

This entry is proudly posted on one of the multimedia stations at my newspaper:

Angry Journalist #4326:

I’m happy. I work for the online department of my paper. Come on over.
