Chinese makes lemonade...

Each year beginning in 1990, demonstrators in Hong Kong have gathered in Victoria Park to commemorate the deaths of the Tianamen Square protestors at the hands of the Chinese government and People's Liberation Army. (BTW, Hong Kong is the only place on Chinese soil where the deaths are publically remembered.)

Numbers of demonstrators have ranged from 25,000 to several hundreds of thousands over teh years depending on what repressive measure Beijing was putting in place at the time.

This year was no different. 35-40,000 people showed up at the annual rally. This year the demonstrators added words of sympathy to the people affected by the Sichuan earthquakes.

For once mainland Chinese media covered the demonstration but failed to mention the reason the demonstration was organized in the first place. They just focussed on the earthquake.

Why am I not surprised at the underhanded nature of reporting by the state-run media?

All the pictures below are the usual Tiananmen Square memorial shots.

CCTV reported the 40,000 mourners in Hong Kong for June 4th as for the earthquake victims...
