Student Rights Bill to Target Washington State
A Washington State University student is looking to team up with a legislator to try to improve protections for college and high school journalists in the Evergreen State.
The Student Press Law Center has the story (read it
here
) about WSU student Brian Schraum who has asked
state Rep. Dave Upthegrove to help him. The task is to get the state legislature to consider a bill that would add protections for high school and college journalists.
Schraum, who was editor of the student newspaper at Green River Community College before enrolling at WSU, told the SPLC that he decided to work for a student-rights bill as a response to
Hosty v. Carter,
the court case that may make it easier for public colleges to censor some student publications.
