Kansas Lawmaker Pushes for Prior Review Committees
As supporters of student press rights try to take a step forward in Washington state, a Kansas legislator looks to move the Jayhawk state a step backward.
A Kansas lawmaker has offered up a proposal that would allow committees to consider the content of high school newspapers before the papers are published. Rep. Don Myers' proposal would allow schools to establish three-person committees to the review student newspapers. Each committee would be made up of a member of the school board, a parent and the superintendent or a designee. No one with journalism experience or training would be required for the committee.
