Josh Wolf: Free at last

Freelancer Josh Wolf is being released from jail after he provided prosecutors (and the public) with video tape that was at the center of the legal battle. Wolf, however, reached an agreement with prosecutors so that he will not be required to testify before a grand jury. You can read more about this elsewhere on the SPJ site and in this SF Chronicle story.

Dave Aeikens adds:

President Christine Tatum is quoted in this story. Here is the Washington Post story.  Region 10 Director Nathan Isaacs had this to say about it. The long ordeal appears to have ended. Feel free to post your comments on the situation on this blog. You can see the video and read statements about the the latest developmnets here.

The Columbia Journalism Review revisits the debate on whether Wolf is a journalist.

It's good for Josh Wolf that he is out. This never should have gotten this far. Let's pass a Shield law.

I'm a little disturbed that he turned over the video. Granted, he put it up on the Web so it's not like turning over unpublished material, but it still looks like the government won, and that it going to make harder for the next person who gets in the government's sights.

This episode does underscore the need for a federal shield law.
