Adviser Settles Lawsuit With Ocean County College

Karen Bosley will get to go back to teaching journalism and advising the student newspaper at Ocean County College under an agreement she recently reached with the school. Also under the agreement, the school will pay Bosley $90,000.

Bosley sued the school after officials had refused to renew her contract as adviser in December 2005. She argued that the school's actions were a response to articles published in the Viking News that were critical of college President Jon Larson. By removing the adviser, she said, school officials were attempting to control the student newspaper.

Last year SPJ and College Media Advisers each investigated the case and had recommended that Bosley be reinstated as adviser and journalism teacher.
