Judge Orders Reporters to Testify in Hatfill Case

A federal judge today ordered five journalists to identify the government officials who anonymously provided information to them about an investigation of Steven Hatfill, the scientist who was identified as "a person of interest" in the 2001 anthrax attacks.

U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton ruled that the following reporters must reveal their anonymous sources in the case: Michael Isikoff and Daniel Klaidman of Newsweek; Allan Lengel of The Washington Post; Toni Locy, formerly of USA Today; and James Stewart, formerly of CBS News.

In his ruling, Walton denied Hatfill's request for information from the following media companies: ABC, CBS, The Washington Post, Newsweek, The Associated Press, The Baltimore Sun and The New York Times.

In his lawsuit, Hatfill has accused the Justice Department and the FBI of violating the federal Privacy Act by providing information about him to the news media.
