The Gates of Gain and Pain
Most investigative reporting focuses on the miscues of government and business, but this week Charles Piller, Edmund Sanders and Robyn Dixon of the Los Angeles Times are giving us a close look at what goes on in the not-for-profit world. Their "Dark Cloud over Good Works of Gates Foundation" reveals how the good deeds of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are financed through investments in many companies "that have failed tests of social responsibility because of environmental lapses, employment discrimination, disregard for worker rights, or unethical practices." Piller, Sanders and Dixon do a nice job of balancing examples of the great good that the Gates Foundation has accomplished with examples of the harm their investments can cause.
