Voices of the Veterans

Veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars tell their stories in their own words in videos presented by Good magazine. Founder Ben Goldhirsh describes Good as a magazine, films, events and original multimedia content for "people who give a damn." The stark "Volunteers" videos by Jody Lipes, Henry Joost and Lindsay Utz certainly fulfil that mission by presenting veterans with a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, including people who volunteered to travel the world, pay for college, get health insurance and serve their country. I appreciated the opportunity to see and hear these veterans in an unadorned way through "Volunteers," which comes with photos by Trujillo-Paumier and text by Paul Rieckhoff.

Good's "Transparency" section offers fascinating charticles as creative ways to share information. For example, the "Drink Up" graphic tells the story of the world's water, showing how much is used for agriculture, industry and home use, how often children die from water-related diseases and how much water is consumed by one flush of an American toilet compared with the average daily water use by a single person in Mozambique.

Thank you Phil Kaplan for turning me on for good to Good.  www.goodmagazine.com/section/Features/issue/issue005
