Sports Stories

I've seen some great stories lately on sports that I'd like to share. "Keeping Track," by Stephen M. Katz and Poh Si Tang of the Virginian-Pilot, is a fascinating audio slideshow showing what life is like for the workers who clean the barns and exercise the horses at the Colonial Downs racetrack. http://content.hamptonroads.com/story.cfm?story=128321&ran=92309

I guess doing wheelies on a bicycle doesn't really count as a sport, but it definitely takes some athletic skill. In the intriguing "The No Hand King," Josh Shaffer of The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C., profiles Rodney Hines, a man everyone in town has seen riding a wheelie around the state capitol. Shaffer tells us how Hines is determined to ride a wheelie all the way to California in support of the U.S. troops in Iraq. newsobserver.com/lifestyles/sundayjournal/stories/story/614783.html

Vincent M. Mallozzi of The New York Times gives us the short and sweet "Two Guys Visit Yankee Stadium," the tale of a Syracuse man who wants to give an unforgettable gift to his best friend, who is going blind. The end to this story is a home run. Thank you Ken Sternberg for recommending this one. http://select.nytimes.com/search/restricted/article?res=F60915FF3C5A0C7A8EDDAF0894DF404482

Finally Katie Lewis of The Ottawa Citizen gives us "It's Almost Like He Waited," the touching story of a little boy who was determined to see one last hockey game. www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/story.html?id=2edb8822-9e2a-4a9d-9406-1731a5222afd&k=66099

Are there any sports stories that you admire? Leave us a comment if there are.
