The Deadliest Diseases
The New York Times is running a terrific series looking at the six diseases that are most likely to kill Americans. "Six Killers" offers the most comprehensive explanation that I've seen of why some diseases are so deadly, what advances have been made in their treatment and why so many people struggle to get the care they need. Sunday's story on cancer by Denise Grady is an example of this series' wonderful depth, giving us vivid examples of the options and obstacles that cancer patients face and providing advice on how to get the best care from doctors and insurance companies. The series has already included stories on diabetes, stroke and heart disease. Still to come: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and Alzheimer's. http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/health/series/sixkillers/index.html
For another example of a fascinating New York Times story, check out David Kocieniewski's "Scared Silent." Kocieniewski describes how at least 20 people within sight of a gang gun battle that killed a 7-year-old girl claim they can't name the shooter. Thank you Kate Giammarise for suggesting this one.
