The Wounds of War
Gregg Zoroya of USA Today deserves applause for using the Freedom of Information Act to uncover an important story about U.S. troops who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. His "20,000 Vets' Brain Injuries Not Listed in Pentagon Tally" reveals that "about five times as many troops sustained brain trauma as the 4,471 officially listed by the Pentagon through Sept. 30." To investigate the truth about brain injuries, Zoroya needed to file FOIA requests to get records from some of the bases where American troops have been treated for head wounds. For more than a year, Zoroya has done a terrific job tracking the toll of brain injuries through a series of articles he has written. We are grateful for his persistence. www.usatoday.com/news/military/2007-11-22-braininjuries_N.htm#discov
