INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA
VIA TELECONFERENCE
SEPTEMBER 1, 2005
MEETING CALLED TO ORDER
With President Irwin Gratz presiding, the executive committee of the Society of Professional Journalists via a telephonic conference call originating in Indianapolis, Indiana at 1 p.m. EST on Thursday, September 1, 2005.
ROLL CALL
In addition to President Gratz, the following were in attendance: President-elect David Carlson; Secretary/Treasurer Christine Tatum; Immediate Past President Mac McKerral; Director At Large Jim Parker; and Region 3 Director Holly Fisher. Executive Director Terry Harper, Deputy Executive Director Julie Grimes and Director of Programs Chris Vachon also were in attendance.
ETHICS AWARD
The executive committee discussed whether or not to make an ethics award in 2005. No formal nomination applications were received by the deadline. In the absence of an application the executive committee agreed it would not present an ethics award in 2005 and would encourage the ethics committee to come up with some nominations in 2006.
COMMUNICATIONS STRATEGY
The executive committee reviewed the three proposals from public relations firms to develop an external communications strategy for the Society. It was the sense of the committee that none of the proposals adequately addressed the Society's needs.
Gratz appointed Tatum to chair a public relations committee to review the Society's internal and external communications needs and offer recommendations back to the executive committee.

Upon proper motion and second by Fisher and Carlson, respectively, the executive committee awarded the Campus Adviser of the Year Award to Ernie Wiggins, University of South Carolina.
