James K. Gentry, Ph.D., is professor and former dean at the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas.

Gentry is nationally known for his work in helping corporate communicators and journalists understand accounting and financial data, and for his consulting in helping media companies with change and convergence. In the past two years, he has made presentations to thousands of corporate communicators and journalists on understanding financial statements and documents.

In June, Gentry presented a workshop on understanding the numbers of business for Teva Neuroscience, the world's largest generic drug company. He is scheduled to do financial workshops for communication staff members at Exxon Mobil and American Standard in the coming fall.

Each fall, he teaches "Financial Fundamentals for Communicators" for professionals enrolled in the University's' master's degree program in Marketing Communications. He also teaches "Advanced Writing for Communicators" and "Multimedia Management" for graduate students.

Gentry has presented workshops on understanding accounting and finance for business editors and reporters across the country under the sponsorship of the Reynolds Center for Business Journalism at the American Press Institute. He also has done workshops for Bloomberg News, the Seattle Times and the San Jose Mercury.

Gentry also is active in consulting in change and convergence, helping newspapers and broadcast operations develop partnerships in the areas of content, advertising, promotions, online and community outreach. He has worked with clients in Tampa, Toronto, Salt Lake City and the Twin Cities, among others.

He received the Society of American Business Editors and Writers' Distinguished Achievement Award in 2003. Gentry was SABEW's first executive director in 1984-90 while at the University of Missouri.

Gentry joined the University of Kansas in 1997 after five years as dean at the School of Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno. Prior to joining UNR, he was an associate professor, assistant professor and instructor at the Missouri School of Journalism for almost 15 years. He stepped down as dean at KU in June 2004.

Gentry was a reporter and editor for several newspapers before joining the faculty at the University of Missouri. He received his Ph.D. in journalism with an emphasis on management and organizational behavior from the University of Missouri in 1993.

Bio (click to expand) picture Jeff South was state editor and database editor at the Austin American-Statesman before heading to academia in 1997 under the mistaken impression he’d have summers off. He is an associate professor in the School of Mass Communications at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he teaches news writing, legislative reporting, communications technology and media ethics. South has served as a trainer for SPJ, IRE, AP and other organizations. He frequently conducts workshops on, and writes about, computer-assisted reporting, online journalism and media convergence. In 2003, South was awarded a fellowship from the American Society of Newspaper Editors to work at The Charlotte Observer. In 2007, he will serve a six-month Knight International Press Fellowship in Ukraine. For more than 20 years, he was a reporter and editor in Texas, Arizona and Virginia for newspapers such as the Dallas Times Herald, the Phoenix Gazette and The Virginian-Pilot. He also served two years with the U.S. Peace Corps in Morocco.

Bio (click to expand) picture Lee Anne Peck has taught English, journalism, and communications courses since 1988. Most recently she was an assistant professor of international communications at Franklin College Switzerland, Lugano. Over the years, she has advised three student newspapers.

Peck's professional experience began in 1976 as a correspondent for the Moline Daily Dispatch. After graduating with her bachelor's degree, she edited and then managed the regional Choice Magazine of the Front Range. In the mid-1980s, she edited and wrote for publications in Indiana and Delaware; she has worked for the Fort Collins Coloradoan as an editor, a columnist and writing coach and for the Rocky Mountain News as a copy editor. Peck has also worked at the Tampa Tribune's online product, Tampa Bay Online, and for Microsoft's online publication, Denver Sidewalk. Peck began free-lance work in the late 1970s and continues to do free-lance editing, writing, and public relations work.

Her research focuses on all aspects of media ethics. She received a Fulbright to teach journalism at the University of Dubrovnik in Croatia fduring spring semester 2007.
