He received the Society of American Business Editors and Writers' Distinguished Achievement Award in 2003. Gentry was SABEW's first executive director in 1984-90 while at the University of Missouri.

Gentry joined the University of Kansas in 1997 after five years as dean at the School of Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno.
