Call for Programs
Deadline for Submissions: Dec. 19, 2008
We are now accepting program proposals. If you have an idea for a convention session and are interested in taking part in the 2009 national convention, please submit your proposal.
SPJ is searching for professional development programs that contain the following topics or are geared to the following populations:
Journalism History/SPJ History
SPJ Missions (ethics, FOI and diversity)
Beginner New Media
Advanced New Media
Visual Storytelling
Freelancing
Beginner Career Development
Advanced Career Development and Management
The Written Word (short form, broadcast, narrative, storytelling, online, etc.)
The person submitting the proposal:
does not have to be a part of the program at the convention.
will serve as the liaison between SPJ Headquarters and any session participant(s).
should not confirm any speakers before the proposal is accepted to allow for recommendations from the selection committee.
Conference Schedule
To achieve a balanced convention program, SPJ will determine the days and times that programs are presented. Programs will be scheduled for August 27, 28 and 29.
Registration
SPJ does not provide honoraria for speakers at the convention. Speakers are responsible for their travel and lodging expenses. Speakers are also responsible for their convention registration fees. The only exception to the convention registration fee for speakers is for the speaker who is attending the convention for the one day of his/her program. In that situation, the speakers registration is complimentary (no meals are included).
Proposal Submittal Process
Call for Programs must be submitted by December 19, 2008.
Review and Notification Process
After the proposal review process is complete, e-mail notifications will be sent to those who submitted accepted proposals no later than January 29, 2009. E-mail notifications for the declined proposals will be sent no later than February 12, 2009.
Guidelines for Selecting Proposals
SPJ will not select proposals which are attempting to promote a product or issue.
Guidelines for preparing your proposal
SPJ is seeking proposals that:
contain leading-edge information
emphasize training, learning and performance
are how to and hands-on
focus on skill-building
provide personal development strategies
comprise no more than two presenters
Tips for writing the Session Purpose section of the proposal
Write two learning objectives from the perspective of the learner (not the presenters objectives)
Write the learning objectives as action- or results-oriented, using leading words like analyze, discuss, develop, examine, explore, identify, recognize, etc.

Be sure you can deliver what you promise in your proposal.
Be sure your proposal is detailed and complete.
