SPJ Ethics Week 2017

SPJ's Code of Ethics states that ethical journalism is truthful, compassionate, independent and transparent. We need ethical journalism -- and journalists who work each day with the profession's highest standards in mind -- now more than ever.

The goal of Ethics Week 2017 is to not only help journalists explain how they ethically cover stories, but to share with the public information about what journalists do, how to identify ethical journalism, where to find it and how to support it.

The People, The Press and The President: A #BHeard Town Hall

The government is declaring war on the press and the press is fighting to uphold the journalistic freedom necessary for democracy to function. Genuine news media outlets are discredited at every turn while fake news -- the real fake news -- gains influence. It's no wonder that public trust in the media is at an unprecedented low.

But it's not just a battle between Trump and The New York Times. Everyone's freedom is at stake if the press is silenced and power goes unchecked. Public trust in a free press has actually never been more vital. How do we begin to bridge the divide between the public and the press and together, keep our government accountable?

The cameras stop rolling at 9pm, but an hour-long conversation will continue over drinks in the BRIC House lobby! During the #BHeard Bar from 9:00-10:00PM, explore the Public Access/Open Networks exhibition in the Gallery and record your own #BHeard NOW segment in the TV Studio.

Attendance is free with RSVP.

Application Deadline: Dori Maynard Diversity Leadership Program

SPJ works to promote a broader voice for diverse journalists in newsrooms across the country, and to expand the depth and quality of news reporting through better sourcing.

Strengthening SPJ's diversity membership representation is important to the organization's health and future. Application Deadline: Terry Harper Memorial Scholarship

SPJ will award scholarships to the Excellence in Journalism conference in memory of Terry Harper, SPJ's executive director from 2002 to 2009.

Terry passed away on June 2, 2009 after a two-year battle with brain cancer. At the young age of 45, he left behind a loving wife, two teenage sons and an SPJ family that loved and respected him.

As executive director, one of Terry's highest priorities was the development of high-caliber training opportunities for SPJ members. In honor of Terry's lasting efforts to improve SPJ and the entire journalism community, the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation set up a memorial fund following his death. With a generous outpouring of support, the Society can now proudly provide scholarships to SPJ members to attend its annual convention.
