Nominations open for SPJ board seats
This October, SPJ will elect 13 leaders to serve on the Societys 2010-2011 board of directors.
SPJs board of directors provides direction for how the organization carries out its mission to improve and protect journalism through programs such as First Amendment advocacy, educational training, and the promotion of the highest standards of ethical reporting.
Board members help define the Society. As an organization that values diversity, SPJ is looking for candidates who represent and encompass differing backgrounds based on race, ethnicity, age, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, disability, appearance, geography, media discipline and professional status. SPJ is branded as the nation’s most broad-based journalism association, which is a statement to the professional and personal attributes of our membership.
Elections will take place at the 2010 SPJ Convention & National Journalism Conference, Oct. 3-6 in Las Vegas.
Positions up for election this year include:
President-elect (one-year term). This person automatically becomes president of SPJ the following year.
Secretary/Treasurer (one-year term)
Adviser at Large (two-year term)
Director at Large (two-year term)
Student Representatives (two seats; one-year terms). These positions include travel stipends to cover costs of student participation.
Region 1 Director (two-year term representing Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Central/Eastern Pa., Rhode Island and Vermont)
Region 4 Director (two-year term representing Michigan, Ohio, Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia)
Region 5 Director (two-year term representing Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky)
Region 7 Director (two-year term representing Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska)
Region 8 Director (two-year term representing Oklahoma and Texas)
Region 9 Director (two-year term representing Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming)
To run for the national board, candidates must be national SPJ members in good standing, have a demonstrated commitment to SPJ, and provide proof of employer support for SPJ activities. Please review Articles VI and VII of the SPJ bylaws for descriptions and qualifications.
More than a line on a resume, service on the SPJ board is a commitment of utmost honor and requires positive, strategic and collaborative input. Elected members must commit to at least two annual meetings and other potential committee assignments. Board members are asked to contribute to the financial stability of SPJ, either by personal contributions or providing guidance and advice in the fundraising and strategic planning processes.
Candidates for president-elect must have served previously on the SPJ board of directors or the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation board of directors, as chair of a national committee, or as a professional chapter president who has been or is a member of a national committee.
All individuals seeking a national board position will be asked to download and complete this declaration form [PDF, 234 KB], submit a photo and complete a board questionnaire that will be distributed to all voting delegates.

Although there is no deadline to declare, any candidate wishing to have his/her candidacy announced in Quill must meet a June 18, 2010, copy deadline.

Dave Aeikens served as SPJ's president from September 2008 to August 2009. He served as president-elect in 2007-2008, winning a Presidents Award in 2008. He was national secretary-treasurer in 2006-2007. He was SPJs Legal Defense Fund Chairman from 2005 to 2007. He served as Region 6 director for six years and Minnesota Pro Chapter president and secretary. He has been a reporter and editor at the St. Cloud Times for 15 years. He has covered schools, state government and served as the paper's night city editor for four years. He has worked 17 years in daily journalism in Minnesota. He and a colleague wrote articles that showed some government agencies in Minnesota were charging more than state law allowed for paper copies of government data. They won numerous awards for the stories and the Legislature changed state law to limit what governments can charge to 25 cents a page. He is an aficionado of Minnesota open records laws and has one numerous Freedom of Information awards. He is a member of the Minnesota Joint Media committee and was honored in 2000 and 2006 with the Presidents Award, which the Minnesota Pro Chapter gives for meritorious service. He was one of the founding organizers of the Midwest Journalism Conference, which jointly is the SPJ Region 6 conference combined with five other media organizations. With more than 300 attendees, it is one of the most successful regional conferences in the country.
