Ethics Week Grants

Who

Fully chartered chapters in good standing with the national organization are eligible to submit a grant proposal. In addition, chapters must have filed a 2012-13 annual report or provided the national office with materials required for a new or reactivating chapter.

What

SPJ will award up to $500 to chapters with plans for unique, diverse and creative programming. Past programs focused on ethics, technology, campus crime coverage, freelancing, covering disasters, copy editing, job hunting, writing techniques, diversity and more.

When

Chapter Grants will be awarded in 4 rounds, each awarding up to $500, in October, December, February and April. Proposals must be submitted by midnight, ET, on any given deadline (see timeline, above right). Selected chapters will be notified within two weeks of application deadline and results will be posted on the Leading Edge and on this page. Chapters that were not selected will not be notified. Consult the timeline for all important dates.

Proposals should be submitted for programs occurring before July 31 to fall within SPJ’s fiscal year.

How

Write it up.

Proposals should include:

— Chapter name and region number
— At least one contact person, with complete contact information
— Name and date of the proposed program
— Detailed description of the program, including objectives
— How the program will benefit chapter members
— Relevant details, such as speakers, format, outline, etc.
— The requested amount, not to exceed $500
— A preliminary budget for program, including indications of how grant money will be spent
— Reasons why your chapter cannot fund this event without grant funds

Turn it in.

Proposals:

— Must be submitted by midnight, ET, on the cycle deadline
— Are only accepted in digital format via the online form

The Fine Print

Grants of up to $500 may be awarded. Chapters may receive less or be asked to match a grant amount with funds of their own.

Chapters are only eligible for one grant from the 2013-14 Chapter Grants.

Proposals for Spring Conference programming will not be considered.

Grant proposals must be submitted for each deadline. If they were not selected, they do not automatically roll over. Chapters can apply multiple times, but only receive one grant.

Chapters selected to receive a grant will receive funds AFTER the chapter submits the required grant program recap, along with receipts, within 15 days of the completion of the program.
