Our Mission
The Society of Professional Journalists is dedicated to the perpetuation of a free press as the cornerstone of our nation and our liberty.

To ensure that the concept of self-government outlined by the U.S. Constitution remains a reality into future centuries, the American people must be well informed in order to make decisions regarding their lives, and their local and national communities.

It is the role of journalists to provide this information in an accurate, comprehensive, timely and understandable manner.

It is the mission of the Society of Professional Journalists:

— To promote this flow of information.
— To maintain constant vigilance in protection of the First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and of the press.
— To stimulate high standards and ethical behavior in the practice of journalism.
— To foster excellence among journalists.
— To inspire successive generations of talented individuals to become dedicated journalists.
— To encourage diversity in journalism.
— To be the pre-eminent, broad-based membership organization for journalists.
— To encourage a climate in which journalism can be practiced freely.

Employment Opportunities with SPJ
Fundraising Coordinator
Application Deadline: August 14, 5 p.m. ET

The Society of Professional Journalists is the nation’s largest and most broad-based membership association for journalists. We are dedicated to the preservation of a free press as the cornerstone of our nation and our liberty. To accomplish this, SPJ hires smart, energetic individuals who are hell-bent on improving the Society’s offerings and operations while also making a name for themselves. After training, we get out of the way and give them the freedom to do just that.

We’re looking for a candidate to fill the newly created position of fundraising coordinator. The full-time gig, based in Indianapolis, includes competitive salary, excellent benefits and paid leave. How do we define a fundraising coordinator? Someone who assists with all aspects of fundraising efforts of the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation (a 501c3 charity) and the Society of Professional Journalists (a 501c6 non-profit).

What we’re looking for:

— Someone who is so organized, they know the birthdays and anniversaries of all their relatives (including in-laws and cousins).
— Someone who is a whiz on digital platforms, has an educational background or some experience with non-profit fundraising.
— Someone who sees the big picture, but doesn’t let details fall through the cracks.
— Someone who can jump from task to task with cat-like nimbleness.
— Someone who isn’t an ass and gets along with just about anyone.
— Someone who asks a lot of questions, but knows when to shut up and get to work.
— Someone who cares deeply about the quality of their work.
— Someone who reads this detailed description from top to bottom.

Primary duties will include:

— Help prepare and maintain a yearly schedule/timelines for fundraising efforts.
— Search for and research potential donors and foundations to identify and evaluate potential funding sources.
— Oversee the Society’s annual auction (both live and silent).
— Develop fundraising messages.
— Assist with grants/project proposals and progress reports as required by program contract and agreements.
— Coordinate donor communications.
— Maintain sections of website pertinent to all fundraising efforts.
— Maintain donor database.
