The Society of Professional Journalists is dedicated to the perpetuation of a free press as the cornerstone of our nation and our liberty.

To ensure that the concept of self-government outlined by the U.S. Constitution remains a reality into future centuries, the American people must be well informed in order to make decisions regarding their lives, and their local and national communities.

It is the role of journalists to provide this information in an accurate, comprehensive, timely and understandable manner.

It is the mission of the Society of Professional Journalists:

Employment Opportunities with SPJ
Communications Coordinator

The Society of Professional Journalists is the nation’s largest and most broad-based membership association for journalists. We are dedicated to the preservation of a free press as the cornerstone of our nation and our liberty. To accomplish this, SPJ hires smart, energetic individuals who are hell-bent on improving the Society’s offerings and operations while also making a name for themselves. After training, we get out of the way and give them the freedom to do just that.

This newly created, part-time position is ideal for: an upperclassmen with lots of internship experience; a young professional looking to get his/her start; or a stay-at-home parent wanting the opportunity to interact with adults, get his/her communications juices flowing and earn some extra cash.

What we’re looking for:

— Someone who is so organized, they know the birthdays and anniversaries of all their relatives (including in-laws and cousins).
— Someone who is a whiz on digital platforms, has experience with non-profit communications and is capable of sharing information in ways that make people listen.
— Someone who sees the big picture, but doesn’t let details fall through the cracks.
— Someone who can jump from task to task with cat-like nimbleness.
— Someone who isn’t an ass and gets along with just about anyone.
— Someone who asks a lot of questions, but knows when to shut up and get to work.
— Someone familiar with AP Style.
— Someone who cares deeply about the quality of their work.
— Someone who isn’t a wimp.
— Someone who reads this detailed description from top to bottom.

Primary duties will include:

— Develop and implement marketing plans for programs and services, including but not limited to annual conferences and other regularly occurring training events. Plans should take into account marketing before, during and after each program.
— Manage social media channels, engaging with respective communities.
— Assist with creation/dissemination of regular member communications, such as e-newsletters.
— Work to create and distribute news releases and announcements.
— Manage media inquiries in conjunction with client.
