Bio (click to expand)
Jodi Cleesattle is a deputy attorney general for the California Department of Justice, where she works in the Civil Divisions Employment, Regulation & Administration Section in San Diego. Prior to joining the Attorney Generals Office in 2007, she was a partner at Ross, Dixon & Bell, LLP, where she handled media law cases including defending libel and defamation cases, providing prepublication review, opposing subpoenas issued to reporters, and litigating First Amendment cases as well as other commercial litigation.
Jodi previously worked as a daily news reporter for The Lancaster (Ohio) Eagle-Gazette, covering politics and legal issues, which led her to law school and resulted in her accidentally becoming a lawyer. She was the founding editor of The National Jurist, a 100,000-circulation national magazine for law students, which she edited from 1991 to 1997. She also previously worked as a freelance reporter covering politics, education and even sports for weekly newspapers in Ohio.
Jodi has been a member of the Society of Professional Journalists since 1986, and she currently serves on the national board as Region 11 director. She also serves as Project Sunshine Chair for Southern California and is a member of SPJs national FOI Committee and Legal Defense Fund Committee. At the local level, Jodi serves on the board of the SPJ San Diego Pro Chapter and was chapter president from 2007 to 2009. A member of Californians Aware and the California First Amendment Coalitions, Jodi provides assistance to journalists with questions about access to public records and government meetings, the reporters shield, libel and defamation, and other issues.
She also serves as editor of Lawyers Club News, the monthly newsletter of Lawyers Club of San Diego, a bar association dedicated to the advancement of women in the law and society, and she freelances for San Diego Lawyer magazine.
She graduated summa cum laude from American Universitys Washington College of Law and received her B.A. in communications/print journalism, cum laude, from American University.
