Get Ready to Grow
You've been preparing for four years (or more) and now you're working 40 hours a week (or more) as a professional journalist.
You've been on the job for no more than three years, and now you're looking for the keys to a successful, long-term journalism career. You will find a good start at the SPJ Reporters Institute this fall in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The Institute was designed with you in mind, by industry trainers and young journalists who face many of the same challenges you are confronting every day. We want you to successfully face those challenges, and we want to help.
During the institute, we will tackle these topics:
• Making sound, defensible decisions and how those decisions affect our readers.
• Creating a document-driven newsroom that relies on and embraces public information and its role in our democracy.
• The differences between good writing and great writing.
• The latest technology and techniques for telling stories, and we'll include hands-on demonstrations and tutoring in those methods.
• The advanced reporting skills that say, "we're serious about journalism, and we intend to provide information that empowers and equips our readers to meet the challenges of today."
• Understanding and influencing the newsroom culture and managing life and work issues.
• The industry its challenges and triumphs, and where it might be going.
It's a lot to accomplish in a few short days. It will be intense, and there will be some work involved. But we also promise some fun. And we're betting that you'll leave with a whole new support network of colleagues around the country who share a passion for journalism and are at similar points in their careers.
The total cost for the program is $300 plus your travel to The Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla. Once you're there, we'll take care of your hotel and most meals. We'll also provide any necessary transportation while youÕre there.
So, talk to your editor, make the commitment together,
and apply now for your spot at The Reporters Institute.
