SPJ’s inaugural Reporters Institute — which took place in November 2007 at The Poynter Institute in Florida — was a rousing success, as 35 young journalists gathered for four days of professional development, camaraderie and inspiration. But don’t take our word for it.

“...In the weeks that have followed, story ideas — hard investigations and soft features — have come to me in a way I haven't felt since I was stretching for ideas at my college paper. And this is to say nothing of the benefits that will continue to flow as I keep in touch with the fellow travelers I met.”
            —Eric Snyder, The Leaf-Chronicle

“I again wanted to pass-on heartfelt thanks for putting on the Reporter's Institute. First you assembled such a comprehensive list of topics. And then, I almost fainted when I saw the speaker list, all these journalists that I had admired from afar were attending. Each night, I was just so energized by it all ...So thanks again. And I'll be sure to hand in an application for SPJ membership. What you did this past half-week really makes me believe in the purpose and the practices of the organization.”
            — Robert Samuels, The Miami Herald

“I just returned back to my newsroom from four days at the Reporters Institute, which you, in part, made possible. And I have to thank you for this amazing opportunity. I have literally come back to work with a notebook full of ideas, specific and general, for my newspaper and my newsroom, as well as 34 new friends and contacts in the beginnings of their news careers. Especially helpful were the speakers from the St. Petersburg Times and people like Roy Peter Clark, whose writing tips I read in journalism classes for years. So thank you for making this program possible!”
            — Cara O'Brien, Loveland Reporter-Herald

About the Reporters Institute
SPJ created the Reporters Institute because we identified a need for well-trained, well-equipped young, professional journalists who are committed to their profession and have the potential to be "visionaries" for the industry.

We knew the program, which is designed for journalists with no more than three years experience, would be ambitious. We knew it was possible. And we knew it was necessary. And, with almost 100 years of experience aiding and equipping professional and collegiate journalists and advocating for the profession, we knew that the Society of Professional Journalists was positioned to execute this program with great success. Judging by the responses, we were right.

For just $300 and travel expenses, Reporters Institute participants were trained in the following areas:
— Making sound, defensible decisions and how those decisions affect our readers.
— Creating a document-driven newsroom that relies on and embraces public information and its role in our democracy.
— The differences between good writing and great writing.
— The latest technology and techniques for telling stories, and we'll include hands-on demonstrations and tutoring in those methods.
— The advanced reporting skills that say, "we're serious about journalism, and we intend to provide information that empowers and equips our readers to meet the challenges of today."
— Understanding and influencing the newsroom culture and managing life and work issues.
— The industry - its challenges and triumphs, and where it might be going.
