Name change chat rescheduled + #thankajourno contest

By Ellen Kobe, SPJ Communications Department

SPJ headquarters will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 28 and Friday, Nov. 29 in observance of Thanksgiving. If your need is urgent, please email Executive Director Joe Skeel at SPJ headquarters staff wishes you safe travels, fun family time and good eats this Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is a time to be grateful for all the joys in our lives, including those that come from the newsroom. What better way to celebrate the holiday than by honoring a journalist that has impacted your career? Perhaps it's your editor who helps you better your skills. Or that colleague who always brings a smile to the newsroom. Maybe it's a mentor who's taught you lifelong lessons about the field.

Post an Instagram photo about your favorite journalist with the hashtag #thankajourno. It could be a shot of them working, a piece of their work in journalism or something that just reminds you of them - get creative! All posts will be included on our JournoDays Tumblr, and the winner will receive a prize from HQ. We can't wait to hear about everything you've learned from your fellow journalists.

As you know, journalism is a critical part of our society. For the past 104 years, SPJ has dedicated itself to educating, supporting and protecting those who serve in this vital role. But we can't do that without your help.

Please take time today to donate to SPJ's educational charity: The Sigma Delta Chi Foundation.

In 2013, the SDX Foundation used tax-deductible donations from supporters and journalists like you to invest in SPJ programs across the country. These investments included:

—Direct grants to support SPJ chapter programming at the grassroots level
—A national diversity-outreach program to broaden our coalition
—Cutting-edge training programs for journalists at all levels
—Awards programs that recognize and foster excellence in journalism
—Ongoing support for the Student Press Law Center (SPLC) and the National Freedom of Information Coalition (NFOIC)

You can have monthly contributions to the Foundation automatically charged to your credit card by calling SPJ HQ Bookkeeper Sarah Beck at 317.920.4787.

Due to technical difficulties, the blog chat about the SPJ name change that was supposed to occur last week has been rescheduled to Monday, Dec. 2 at 12 p.m. EST. If you missed the memo before, you have another chance to get your opinion heard.

Connect with SPJ leaders online as they discuss whether or not SPJ should change its name to the Society for Professional Journalism. Former presidents will be available to answer questions and give their thoughts on the matter. We hope that you can join the conversation - the more perspectives, the better!

Joining SPJ has never been easier with our new auto dues system. We can now set up your membership to automatically charge your credit card every month. For example, if you're a professional member you can spend just $6.67 each month instead of $75 once a year. That's cheaper than Netflix!

All membership types are eligible for this program - we can even factor in your annual SDX Foundation donations. For this cheap rate, you should consider giving a fellow colleague or aspiring college student an SPJ membership as a holiday gift.

To sign up, call Bookkeeper Sarah Beck at 317.920.4787. For more information, email her at

Speaking of gift giving, the SPJ J-Mart has something for all of your journalism friends during the holidays. There are plenty of options for the caffeine addict, the baby of a journalist, the food critic and more. Choose from a large selection on Café Press' online site, where you can order all these gifts with a click of a button. Happy shopping!
