Name change survey + communications postgrad internship

By Ellen Kobe, SPJ Communications Department

We're asking all members to complete an online survey about the potential SPJ name change and related issues of the organization. The survey will take no more time to complete than it would take to wrap one present, and there could be a present in it for you. We'll send an SPJ gift to one of the respondents selected at random.

So please take a moment to complete the survey, which can be accessed online: Your answers will provide valuable information to our national officers as they sift through the name change issue.

Do you know an SPJ volunteer who consistently goes above and beyond the call of duty? Maybe someone with great program ideas, stellar bookkeeping skills, or who tirelessly fights for press rights? If so, please send us your nominee's name, chapter, email address and why you think he or she deserves to be our SPJ Volunteer of the Month. There are no special rules to win, except the volunteer must be an active member of SPJ. Help us show some SPJ LOVE. Send your nominations by Dec. 10 to president-elect and membership chair Dana Neuts at Watch SPJ Leads and our social media channels when we announce the winner!

If you're a recent college graduate (or about to be), consider applying for a year-long internship at SPJ headquarters. The Communications Postgraduate Intern is responsible for all writing, marketing, social media and public relations efforts of the organization. Based in Indianapolis, the position includes a competitive salary, excellent benefits and paid leave.

The application deadline is Jan. 29, 2014 at 5 p.m. To apply, send a cover letter, resume and 3-5 writing samples and three professional references to Tara Puckey via Google Drive at You are responsible for making sure the application is accessible.

Congratulations to Anna Pryor, who won the #thankajourno Instagram contest for the following photo:

Thanks to everyone who submitted photos of journalists they are grateful for. You can view all of the entries on our JournoDays Tumblr.

As you know, journalism is a critical part of our society. For the past 104 years, SPJ has dedicated itself to educating, supporting and protecting those who serve in this vital role. But we can't do that without your help.

Please take time today to donate to SPJ's educational charity: The Sigma Delta Chi Foundation.

In 2013, the SDX Foundation used tax-deductible donations from supporters and journalists like you to invest in SPJ programs across the country. These investments included:

—Direct grants to support SPJ chapter programming at the grassroots level
—A national diversity-outreach program to broaden our coalition
—Cutting-edge training programs for journalists at all levels
—Awards programs that recognize and foster excellence in journalism
—Ongoing support for the Student Press Law Center (SPLC) and the National Freedom of Information Coalition (NFOIC)

You can have monthly contributions to the Foundation automatically charged to your credit card by calling SPJ HQ Bookkeeper Sarah Beck at 317.920.4787.

The Sigma Delta Chi awards are open for submissions, so you know what that means - the SDX Awards Dinner will be here before you can say, "and the winner is..." Now is your chance to sign up as a sponsor for this event, which gives prestigious honors to journalists from all over the world.

There are many different levels of sponsorship, including one that's particularly fitting for our members called "Friend of SPJ." This $500 package includes two VIP tickets to the SDX Awards Dinner, two VIP tickets to the cocktail reception, recognition in the program book and a badge on your name tag.

To see other sponsorship levels, please visit our website. If you want to secure your sponsorship or have any questions, please contact Awards Coordinator Chad Hosier at 317.920.4791.

The AP-NORC Journalism Fellowship of Community Resilience is seeking an experienced journalist with an interest in how communities face times of hardship, such as natural disasters or economic strain. The 9-month program will begin in January 2014 and offers a salary of up to $75,000 as well as full benefits. The Fellow will spend about 40 percent of the time in Chicago for training and sixty percent in New York and New Jersey areas that were affected by Superstorm Sandy for reporting. Applications will be accepted online on a rolling basis.

Television journalist Katie Couric announced last week that she is leaving ABC. Where is her new job?

Answer: Yahoo! News

And the winner is ... John Hopkins from the Florida Pro chapter. Congrats!
