WATCHDOG REPORTING WORKSHOP

Do you have reporters or editors on your staff who would benefit from training to help them produce enterprise and investigative stories? Thanks to a grant from the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation, the SPJ is working with Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) and the New England Center for Investigative Reporting (NECIR) to offer a two-day Watchdog Reporting Workshop for journalists in Philadelphia on March 24-25.

We're looking for two reporters, editors or producers from your newsroom who you believe have the desire and the potential to do in-depth investigative stories. No previous investigative reporting experience necessary. This workshop will teach the basics including how to mine the internet for information that leads to compelling stories, how to crunch data, how to conduct an investigative interview and how to investigate businesses and nonprofits.

If your team is chosen, there will be follow-up training opportunities (Google meet-ups, webinars, etc.) and ongoing story consulting for a limited period of time. The sessions and the follow-up training are free. You'll be responsible for any travel costs.

To nominate a team for this opportunity, complete this form by the end of the day Feb. 17, 2014.

KY EVENT: NATIVE AMERICAN JOURNALISM

The Louisville Pro chapter received a grant from the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation to bring in Loren Tapahe, publisher of the Arizona Native Scene, to speak on Challenges and Opportunities in Native American Journalism. SPJ AND NPPA PARTNER FOR HAWAII EVENT

On Tuesday, Feb. 11, Mickey Osterreicher, general counsel for the National Press Photographers Association will host an event called "The Right to Photograph and Record in Public" in Honolulu, Hawaii. The program will address First and Fourth Amendment rights, search and seizure, exigent circumstances, federal civil rights lawsuits against police agencies as well as an analysis and update on the most recent cases and court rulings dealing with these issues. Osterreicher also will discuss the coextensive right of both the press and the public to photograph and record as well as provide practical advice regarding the best ways to handle these situations. Check out the event web page for more details.
