Your ethics questions answered, Cleveland murder video

By Rachel Semple, SPJ Communications Department

"Great local reporting stands between you and wrongdoing. And it needs saving." -  Margaret Sullivan

WHAT'S HAPPENING

Inquiring minds want to know: Is Facebook a publisher or not? After video of a murder in Cleveland  was uploaded to Facebook Sunday, the social network is facing a lot of issues, just like human editors do, about newsworthiness. The jury is still out.

Journalists, both high profile and local, have been detained or searched at the border. This CJR piece includes tips on safely crossing border areas and features a cool program put on by SPJ Rio Grande to train journalists on their rights when it comes to search and seizure of devices and other issues.

ETHICS ESSENTIALS

Legal doesn't mean ethical: SPJ Ethics Chair Andrew Seaman weighs in on the Cleveland murder video posted to Facebook on Sunday: SPJ's Code of Ethics states "legal access to information differs from an ethical justification to publish or broadcast."

IT'S HERE! Ethics Week is a week specially dedicated each year to promoting and explaining ethical journalism. Check out what we have planned here.
