Enhance the SPJ community

By Christine DiGangi, SPJ Communications Department

The 2012 SPJ membership drive has begun! We've set a goal for members to engage with potential members each week Each One Reach One until Oct. 4.

With each member, SPJ gains unique skill sets and increases its ability to improve and protect journalism. Talk to your colleagues about the organization, how they can benefit from it and why their contributions will be appreciated.

Chapters have been supplied with membership info for on-the-ground recruitment, and you can add your voice to the initiative by discussing SPJ membership on social media with the hashtag #joinspj.

Do your part to enrich the network of the nation's most broad-based journalism organization. Questions? Ask your chapter president, regional director or Membership Committee Chair Holly Edgell.

The first one member, one vote election cycle is upon us. You've heard from board candidates and had the chance to do research through Election Central. Now is the time to update your contact information by logging in to the members' section on or send updated information to Tara Puckey, Chapter Coordinator.

People with questions about elections can call the Election Hotline 317-721-8009 or email

We received fantastic donations for the Legal Defense Fund auction! Anything you by at the auction (at Excellence in Journalism 2012) will support journalists defending press freedoms.

You can feel great about buying a copy of "Ernie Pyle's War," a set of personalized stationery, a kit to make beer bread or an awesome newsprint flask. Check our Instagram feed (@spj_pics), the SPJ Pinterest page, Facebook or Twitter to catch glimpses of the auction offerings.
