See the journalism fun at EIJ13. Plus, we're hiring.

By Christine DiGangi, SPJ Communications Department

COME TO THIS JOURNALISM EXTRAVAGANZA

Have you looked at the list of sessions lined up for Excellence in Journalism 2013? Come to EIJ13 and soak in best practices, must-use tools, data-mining skills, ethics tips and more --- the list of programs will continue to grow!

We're about five months out from EIJ13, and there's plenty to look forward to. Tours, parties, networking --- it's all happening in Southern California from Aug. 24 to 26.

Look at all the amazing education and activity that went on at EIJ12 in Fort Lauderdale --- you can expect EIJ13 to be bigger and better. Keep up with conference updates with #EIJ13 and on Facebook.

SPJ SUPPORTS JANA WINTER

For those keeping up with the coverage of the Aurora, Colo., theater shootings and Jana Winter's role in the investigation, read SPJ's statement on the situation.

Winter has been pressured to reveal the identities of anonymous sources used in her stories about the shooter, James Holmes.

"The confidentiality of sources is a vital tool of journalists to be able to report the truth," SPJ Freedom of Information Committee Chairwoman Linda Petersen said. "It should not be set aside except in the narrowest of circumstances where information relating to a criminal case cannot be revealed any other way. These are not those circumstances."

The full statement is available at SPJ News.

SPJ IS HIRING!

Are you insanely organized? A multitask-extraordinaire? An incredibly intelligent individual? Are you all of these things and a friendly, lovable coworker all at the same time?

Fantastic! You should apply to be SPJ's Awards Coordinator. Details and a full job description are available on our website.

Fun-haters and weaklings need not apply.

JOURNOS, JOURNOS EVERYWHERE

SPJ conducts stellar journalism training in your 'hood. (And by 'hood, we mean between 0 and a few hundred miles from your home.)

Don't miss out! There are five Spring Conferences happening this weekend, and three more after that. Check the schedule. Make plans. You'll kick yourself for not going (see: highlights of the great events that have already happened).

CONGRATULATIONS, AWARD WINNERS!

At the region 4 and 12 conferences last weekend, dozens of students received recognition for their outstanding journalism work.

Congratulations to each honoree, and good luck to the first-place winners as they move on to the national competition! See who won the Region 4 and Region 12 MOE Awards.

SPJ BOARD MEETING

FYI: SPJ's national Board of Directors meets next weekend in Indianapolis. Keep an eye out on spj.org for the meeting agenda --- we'll send that link next week.

If you have any questions or concerns about the meeting, please contact your regional director. A list of regional directors is available on the website.

TRAIN SMARTER WITH SPJ

Bring the best of the Society of Professional Journalists' training to your campus! Thanks to a grant from the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation, the SPJ Journalism Training Program is now available to colleges and universities. Choose from modules on teaching about social media or mobile newsgathering -- or focus on the multimedia basics, including video storytelling and data visualization skills.

Customize your day of training by contacting SPJ's Professional Development co-chairs Deb Wenger (debora.wenger@gmail.com) or Jeff Cutler (jeff@jeffcutler.com).

ANNE NUNAMAKER

Anne Nunamaker died April 10. She joined SPJ in 1978 and served as SPJ D.C. Pro Chapter president from 1988-89.

Nunamaker received the chapter's Distinguished Service Award in 1999.  After a career at the University of Maryland she became an associate professor of journalism at Howard University.  She was a graduate of Vanderbilt University.

(Thanks to Bill McCloskey for the information.)

SANDY HOOK SYMPOSIUM

Join the Dart Center and the Tow Center on Monday, April 22 at Columbia University for a daylong symposium: "Sandy Hook and Beyond: Breaking News, Trauma and Aftermath." The symposium runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Regional and national journalists will be joined by community leaders, Sandy Hook families, mental health experts and policy advocates to discuss what was learned from the coverage and how those lessons will impact the media moving forward. Visit the symposium's online information for a speaker list and event details.

LAST WEEK'S QUIZ

SPJ's national headquarters have been located in three cities. What are they?

Answer: Chicago; Greencastle, Ind.; Indianapolis.

And the winner is ... Emil Dansker, who is going on his 63rd year as an SPJ member. Congratulations!
