Rewards for your messy desk and (what else?) awards!

By Christine DiGangi, SPJ Communications Department

APPLY FOR THE SCRIPPS INSTITUTE

The deadline to apply for Memphis Scripps is this Friday. Note: That's in two days. If you want to experience fantastic SPJ leadership training, you should probably get on that application.

Questions? That's why we have a Tara Puckey. Email her or call HQ at 317.927.8000, ext. 215.

SDX AWARDS BANQUET

The Sigma Delta Chi Awards banquet is at the National Press Club and starts with a 6 p.m. reception, followed by the awards dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are $75 -- all banquet information is available online.

You can review the winning selections from this year's SDX Awards on SPJ's website, and while you're in D.C., enjoy the great training at JournCamp D.C.!

Director of Awards Lauren Rochester can answer any questions you have about the SDX Awards banquet: email her or call SPJ HQ at 317.927.8000, ext. 210.

HIGH SCHOOL ESSAY CONTEST WINNER

Congratulations to the first-, second- and third-place winners of the National High School Essay Contest! The top honor, and a $1,000 scholarship, goes to Courtney Swafford of Wilmington, Del. The news release and winning essays are posted on spj.org.

REGION 8 MOE AWARD WINNERS

The Region 8 (Texas and Oklahoma) and international Mark of Excellence Award winners were awarded over the weekend in San Antonio. Congratulations to the honorees for their exceptional student journalism -- the list of winners is posted to SPJ News.

YOU'RE A MESS

Between now and Monday, May 13, tweet a picture of your messy workspace for a chance to win some SPJ desk supplies -- yes, we're adding to your clutter, but you know you want to Instagram that mess of an area you call a desk.

When posting your picture, use the hashtag #spjdesklove, and we'll add it to our Tumblr. At the end of the contest period, we'll do a random drawing and send SPJ SWAG to the winner!

TEACHER APPRECIATION DAY

There's a lot of love out there for journalism educators -- we asked you to give a shout out to your favorite journalism teachers, and we compiled them in a brief Storify. It's full of warm fuzzies.

CONFERENCE RECAPS

A collection of tweets and tools from SPJinSTL2013, the regions 5 and 7 spring conference, is now posted to the SPJ training collection. It's worth your while to browse and grab some tips.

IMPROVE & PROTECT JOURNALISM FOREVER

By designating the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation, SPJ's supporting foundation, as a beneficiary in your will, life insurance, retirement or other estate plans, you can provide a lasting legacy for the future of journalism.

The Foundation returns thousands of dollars back to the journalism community in support of both SPJ and other journalism organizations that benefit SPJ members. The Foundation is a 501(c)3 charity and gifts are tax deductible.

For more information, visit the website or contact SPJ headquarters at 317.927.8000 ext. 207.

LAST WEEK'S QUIZ

Which media outlet first reported new arrests in the Boston Marathon bombing investigation?

Answer: Trick question. It doesn't matter, and no one cares.
And the winner is ... no one, unfortunately. That's what happens with a trick question, though if someone had called it, they would have been showered in SPJ lapel pins. What a shame.

THIS WEEK'S QUIZ

The Associated Press this week updated its social media guidelines to include what?

Submit your answer to Christine DiGangi.
