EIJ early bird deadline + election season

By Ellen Kobe, SPJ Communications Department

EARLY BIRD RATES END TOMORROW

Planning to attend SPJ, RTDNA and NAHJ's Excellence in Journalism conference in sunny Southern California? Don't wait - TOMORROW is the early bird deadline to receive reduced rates. Save about $200 when you register by July 25. To explore pricing options, please visit the EIJ website.

BOOK YOUR EIJ HOTEL ROOM

Conveniently, we have a hotel block at the Anaheim Marriott - the same place you will be basking in anything and everything EIJ. Reserve your room by Aug. 1 to receive discounted rates.

Looking for a roommate to share hotel costs? Visit the roommate board to leave a comment and find others who are looking for a roommate.

DISNEYPARKS TICKET PICKUP

Those registered for EIJ are not only excited to get great journo-training, but also to visit Disney Parks for FREE. All attendees will receive two park hoppers passes for one full day/night to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. These tickets - good for one week from their issue date - can be picked up at the Disney Parks table located next to the EIJ registration desk in the J-Expo Hall during the following times:

Friday, Aug. 23, Noon-5 p.m.
Saturday, Aug. 24, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
Sunday, Aug. 25, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

PRE-EIJ JOURNO FUN

EIJ is so good, some can't wait to start. That's why on Saturday, Aug. 24, we have a variety of pre-conference workshops and boot camps geared to your interests. Apply for the following programs to get your fill of journalism training before many attendees even arrive.

8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.
NPR's Audio Storytelling Boot Camp

9 a.m. - noon
Nerd-free Zone: Data Crunching and Visualization for Journalism and English majors ($25)
News Directors Boot Camp ($25)
The Business of Me ($25)

9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Dump the Inverted Pyramid: Narrative Storytelling for all Beats ($50)
Bueno Uso del Español

DONATING BEYOND A LIFETIME

It's not too late to make a difference in SPJ - YOU can run for office! Interested? Contact Nominations Chair John Ensslin at damon_runyon@hotmail.com.

Please review the candidates for national office, who will be elected by the SPJ membership. Click here for bios of people who have declared their candidacy.

All members have a say in SPJ's national leaders. Make sure you're ready for the electronic vote in August by having a valid email on file with SPJ HQ. Not sure or need to update it? Contact Chapter Coordinator Tara Puckey at tpuckey@spj.org.

SAY HI IN D.C.

Headed to DC for the 2013 AEJMC Annual Conference? What a coincidence - so are we! SPJ will be hanging around the Expo Hall talking to current advisers about how to make their campus chapters better, and chatting it up with potential advisers about why an SPJ chapter on their campus is so important. Be sure to stop by Booth 309 and ask questions or share your favorite SPJ story.

BENEFITS AND FINANCIAL PLANNING

At SPJ, we're invested in our members, and we strive to provide quality benefits. We're offering you access to insurance and financial planning services through an Indianapolis-based financial services firm and consultants Harry W. Riley, III and David N. Brown. Visit our SPJ Solutions page to read about your options.

AWARDS IN SCIENCE AND FINANCE

Here are some great opportunities to be rewarded for your hard work:

TheRadio Television Digital News Association is once again teaming with the National Endowment for Financial Education to honor the very best in personal finance reporting. The award is presented as part of the Money Matters resource on the RTDNA website. Money Matters is a tool to help journalists better cover stories about financial issues on television, radio and online. Registration will be open from April 4 - July 26, 2013. Click here to enter.

The AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards represent the pinnacle of achievement for professional journalists in the science writing field. The awards recognize outstanding reporting for a general audience and honor individuals (rather than institutions, publishers or employers) for their coverage of the sciences, engineering and mathematics. The deadline to apply is Aug. 1. Visit online for more information.

LAST WEEK'S QUIZ

A fun fact headquarters staff found at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis this weekend: Journalist and 1st Amendment advocate John Seigenthaler won what prestigious award in 2011?

Answer: Freedom Award

And the winner is ... Nerissa Young the campus chapter adviser for Ohio University. Congratulations!

CORRECTION
The quiz answer in the July 17 issue of Leads suggests that politician Anthony Weiner was previously involved in a prostitution scandal. It was actually a sexting scandal.

THIS WEEK'S QUIZ
What social network site did White House photographer Pete Souza join this week, giving journalists, political junkies and citizens more access to presidential goings-on than before?

Submit your answer to Ellen Kobe.
