SPJ Chapter Grants:
The following chapters received Chapter Grants to fund programs that will take place in 2008-2009.
California State University, Fullerton
The 2nd Annual Orange County Spanish Journalism Conference will explore multicultural communication within Spanish media and the challenges of addressing Spanish speakers from different countries. Other topics will include new reporting techniques and technologies, citizenry reporting and content creation, immigration, blogging and much more. The event was held on October 3, 2008.

St. Cloud State University
The First Amendment Forum is an annual event that is put on by our St. Cloud State University Chapter. Each year we focus on a different topic that either relates directly to the First Amendment or brings our journalism students, community members, and other event attendees a look at a topic that they can make use of in their career. This year our focus will be on the topic of religion. Now more than ever, we're seeing more and more religions practicing across the country. The event will take place is April 2009.

University of South Florida
The program will be an ethics panel devoted to the discussion of the media's coverage of race and religion. It will look at objectivity, access to minority and religious groups, examples like Jena 6 and the coverage of Islam after the terrorist attacks. The program was held on October 15, 2008.

Chicago Headline Club
The program will explore ethical dilemmas and challenges journalists face today as they work in the uncharted waters of new mulit-platform media. The chapters goal is to partner with the Poynter institute and feature two foremost journalists who are experts in journalism ethics and can provide a map for those unfamiliar waters. The program will be held in March 2009.

East Tennessee Pro
Because the East Tennessee chapter of SPJ recognizes the need for more information about reporting on the environment, we are planning a workshop and breakout sessions for local and regional news gathers in March in order to prepare them for April, affectionately dubbed Earth Month across the region. Program ideas include: "Accessing the EPA General information about national and regional EPA offices," "The World of Acronyms How to stumble your way through" and "Environmental Law and Policy General outline of basic laws and policy." At each breakout session, a facilitator will provide general information about the topic and facilitate a conversation among participants about the issues journalists face in dealing with each topic. The program will be held in March 2009.

The chapter will hold a one-day seminar for print and broadcast journalists who want to learn to shoot and edit video clips for the Web. It will include training by TV camera operators and TV reporters. The shooters will cover technical aspects and the reporters will explain how to tell a story visually. We'll be using experienced local journalists who have previously conducted in-house training for the Gannett paper in town. The training will take place in March 2009.

The chapter needed to promptly react to the arrests of more than 40 journalists who were detained as they attempted to cover the demonstrations at the Republican National Convention 9/1-4/08 in St. Paul. We did so by convening a community-wide discussion titled "Your Credentials, Please" on Sept. 22 about how well the needs of security were balanced with the public's right to know what was occurring as the demonstrations proceeded. We recruited three co-sponsors from the University of Minnesota The Silha Center for the Study of Media Ethics and Law, the Minnesota Journalism Center and the School of Journalism and Mass Communications and we obtained the university's Coffman Memorial Union Theater as our venue. Our goals were to explore how well law enforcement authorities performed in separating anarchists bent on committing violent acts from legitimate demonstrators and journalists; to show how the arrests of journalists impeded their coverage; to illustrate the difficulties of identifying journalists in a near-riot environment; to discuss the practice of embedding journalists with the police; and to air all of these matters in a reasoned discussion not dominated by interest groups or angry activists. The program was held on September 22, 2008.

Press Club of Long Island
High School Press Day is an annual joint event between the Press Club of Long Island (PCLI) and Hofstra University designed to give students interested in journalism an overview about the profession. Several workshops are conducted during a half-day program on all aspects of journalism, including broadcast, print, radio and online journalism. The program will be held on December 10, 2008.

South Florida Pro
The South Florida Pro Chapter will host a Blog Jam in February 2009. The area has a thriving blogging community, many with decent journalistic standards. We also have, on the other side, many unemployed traditional journalists considering blogging as almost a resume. In addition, we have three universities and two community colleges in our area with enrollments exceeding 20,000. Blogging is a known thing to those students, but not how to do it better.

Western Washington Pro
For the last two years, the chapter has offered a fall continuing education series to chapter members and nonmembers. The focus has been on teaching reporters new media skills that they'll need to maximize their potential and to keep up with or stay ahead of the curve. The program has been very successful to date, educating journalists while also growing our chapter and showing local journalists that our chapter is here to support them no matter what media they represent or the stage of their career. This years series will hold classes focused on taking digital photos for the web, business reporting, shooting/editing video for the web, social media and blogging. The classes will be held in October and November 2008.
