SPJ's Core Four

We are champions for journalists.

We recognize the achievements of journalists and best practices of media organizations through our awards programs.

Learn about our most prestigious national contests, including the Sigma Delta Chi Awards (for pros), Mark of Excellence Awards (students) and New America Award.

Learn about (and enter!) our awards, including fellowships, national honors, local contests and SPJ honors.

We educate journalists on best practices, skills and new innovations.

Our national convention is a can't-miss event, bringing together days packed with training, networking and very special guests.

We offer a bevy of live and on-demand digital training, including programs through our partnerships with the Google News Initiative and Facebook Journalism Project.

Updated constantly, our SPJ Toolbox contains thousands of links helpful for reporters, editors, educators or anyone else doing research.

We create products and services that help instill pride of vocation in journalists at all stages in their career.

When you read Quill, the Society of Professional Journalists’ national magazine, you have your finger on the pulse of American journalism — its challenges, opportunities and responsibilities.

SPJ’s Freelance Hub is home to both a thriving community of working freelancers and a mountain of resources for starting and enhancing your freelancing career. Active members can use our Freelancer Directory to promote their work and get discovered by editors.

SPJ's professional and campus chapters are the backbone of the Society. No matter where your career takes you — from journalism school to the first newsroom and beyond — SPJ is there to help you network in your local community.

Distributed every Wednesday, SPJ's members-only Leads newsletter is packed with journalism news, job opportunties, resources, educational opportunties, and the latest on SPJ’s efforts to improve, protect and champion journalism. (Want to read a sample issue? Check it out here.)

We encourage news organizations to build newsrooms that are diverse, equitable and inclusive.

Confidential and nonjudgmental, SPJ's Race & Gender Hotline provides expertise and answers to questions journalists sometimes don’t know how to ask.

On both chapter and national levels, SPJ provides an open forum for the discussion of diversity issues in journalism. Our Diversity & Inclusion Committee’s purpose is to promote a broader voice in newsrooms across the country and expand the depth and quality of news reports through better sourcing.
