Since 1909, the Society of Professional Journalists has been supporting the needs of journalists serving on the front lines of the events that shape our lives. Now is no different. The SPJ Foundation was established to support this work. The foundation returns thousands of dollars back to the journalism community in support of both SPJ and other journalism organizations that benefit SPJ members. The foundation is a 501(c)(3) charity and gifts are tax deductible.
In these days of COVID-19 exacerbating an already volatile time for the news industry, many journalists are finding themselves furloughed, laid off and left to wonder how they will make ends meet and what will be left of their careers. This is at a time when the news they provide not only informs our lives, but saves lives as well.
With your help, the SPJ Foundation intends to aid these individuals through the creation of the Journalists Emergency Fund, which will provide assistance of up to $500 to help with bills and other living expenses. Journalists will be able to apply online and each application will be reviewed on a case by case basis by a committee of SPJ Foundation leaders and staff. As we understand that funds are often needed immediately, decisions will be made within a quick timeframe of the application being received. As this fund is supported through generous donations, these grants do not have to be paid back.
